- WAIS For Microsoft Windows
- ==========================
-
- Introduction
-
- WAIS for Windows is a simple WAIS client
- for Microsoft Windows. It is based on
- Microsoft Visual Basic, and can easily
- be modified based on your needs.
-
- WAIS for Windows embeds the WAIS protocol
- in a DLL called wais.dll. This DLL must be
- accessible to Windows at run-time.
-
- Getting Started
-
- Searches are quite simple. To select a network
- resource to search, click on the Add Sources
- button. If you are using WAIS for Windows for the
- first time, you will see a source called Directory
- of Servers.
-
- Directory of Servers contains source information only.
- Once you retrieve this source information, you can
- submit queries to those sources.
-
- Double click on it. It will appear within the Sources to
- Search window. Press Ok.
-
- Enter a query in the Tell Me About line. A good start
- is "src" if you selected the Directory of Servers. A
- large number of sources will be returned and displayed.
- To look at the source information, double click on a source
- of interest. It will be displayed in a Text Display window.
- Press Save. You will be shown the source information in
- a formatted window. You may edit the Title of the source.
- Don't modify the other information. Press OK and the source
- be saved in your wais.src file. You may select it and search
- it in future queries.
-
- Relevance Feedback
-
- If you have selected a text file and are viewing it,
- highlight a portion of it with the mouse and press Add Section.
- That section of text will now be used as a refinement for
- future searches. You are, in effect, telling the servers
- to show you all documents similar to the section of text you
- highlighted.
-
- GIF Files
-
- GIF files will be displayed with a program called WINGIF.EXE.
- WINGIF.EXE must be in the same directory as wais.exe.
