  1. WAIS For Microsoft Windows

  4. Introduction

  6. WAIS for Windows is a simple WAIS client
  7. for Microsoft Windows.  It is based on 
  8. Microsoft Visual Basic, and can easily
  9. be modified based on your needs.
  10.  
  11. WAIS for Windows embeds the WAIS protocol
  12. in a DLL called wais.dll.  This DLL must be
  13. accessible to Windows at run-time.

  15. Getting Started
  16.  
  17. Searches are quite simple.  To select a network
  18. resource to search, click on the Add Sources
  19. button.  If you are using WAIS for Windows for the
  20. first time, you will see a source called Directory
  21. of Servers.  
  22.  
  23. Directory of Servers contains source information only.
  24. Once you retrieve this source information, you can
  25. submit queries to those sources.

  27. Double click on it.  It will appear within the Sources to
  28. Search window.  Press Ok.

  30. Enter a query in the Tell Me About line.  A good start
  31. is "src" if you selected the Directory of Servers.  A
  32. large number of sources will be returned and displayed.
  33. To look at the source information, double click on a source
  34. of interest.  It will be displayed in a Text Display window.
  35. Press Save.  You will be shown the source information in
  36. a formatted window.  You may edit the Title of the source.
  37. Don't modify the other information.  Press OK and the source 
  38. be saved in your wais.src file.  You may select it and search 
  39. it in future queries.

  43. If you have selected a text file and are viewing it, 
  44. highlight a portion of it with the mouse and press Add Section.
  45. That section of text will now be used as a refinement for
  46. future searches.  You are, in effect, telling the servers
  47. to show you all documents similar to the section of text you
  48. highlighted.

  52. GIF files will be displayed with a program called WINGIF.EXE.
  53. WINGIF.EXE must be in the same directory as wais.exe.
